Tesco will be teaming up with Heinz to scrap the plastic shrink wrap on own-branded tin multipacks and Heinz beans multipacks. Tesco’s chiefDave Lewis executive announced that the move is part of the supermarket’s ambition to remove all unnecessary and non-recyclable plastics from its stores.
Customers will still be able to take advantage of multipack deals, by simply scanning multiple tins at checkout the discount will be added.
Tesco sells 183,000 multipacks every day. So this will certainly see a big change in the firm’s plastic waste. The move comes after Waitrose recently removing shrink wrap from their most popular multipacks, with shoppers calling the packaging “unnecessary”.
Tesco’s Dave Lewis made announcements last year that suppliers of the supermarket could risk having their contracts terminated if they used “excessive” plastic packaging or packaging that is hard to recycle (such as shrinkwrap).
